Norristown is the Montgomery County seat, so a case that starts here stays in town from the first hearing to trial. Three magisterial district courts, all at 601 DeKalb Street, each cover part of the municipality, and a case held for court goes a few blocks to the Montgomery County Courthouse at 2 East Airy Street. The Norristown Police Department's Records Room handles report requests, and the District Attorney's 2025 annual report describes a Norristown Community Justice Unit that prosecutes criminal cases occurring in Norristown, working with Norristown Police.
Giribaldi Law appears in the Montgomery County courts from its Media office. For the county overview, see our Montgomery County page.

How does a Norristown case move, step by step?
- The arrest or citation by Norristown police or another agency.
- Preliminary arraignment and bail. Montgomery County's Pretrial Services Division is the bail agency, and people who are held go to the county correctional facility in Eagleville; see how bail works in Pennsylvania.
- The preliminary hearing at the 601 DeKalb Street court for that part of town; see the preliminary hearing.
- ARD or the trial track. The Montgomery County DA says ARD applicants generally waive the preliminary hearing and formal arraignment; the county comparison is in how ARD differs in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties.
- The Courthouse. Held cases go to 2 East Airy Street; see what to expect at the Montgomery County Courthouse.
How do I get a Norristown police report, and what does it cost?
The municipality says the Records Room is just inside the main entrance of the police department and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, except government holidays. Reports are requested in person, only a person listed on the report is eligible to receive it, and requests are processed within five business days. Fees are paid first at the Finance office at 235 East Airy Street, first floor, with proof of payment brought to Records. Reports concerning ongoing or active criminal investigations are not released without a court order.
| Item (Norristown police service fees) | Fee |
|---|---|
| Accident report | $15 |
| Incident report | $20 |
| Body-worn camera video and audio | $125 |
| Local criminal history check | $10 |
| Fingerprints, municipal resident (per card) | $5 |
| Fingerprints, non-resident (per card) | $20 |
| Administrative fee for towed vehicles | $45 |
In a pending criminal case, video and reports usually come through discovery from the District Attorney after arraignment instead; see the discovery and motion deadlines after arraignment, which follow the same statewide rules in Montgomery County.
How is bail posted in Norristown?
Bail for Montgomery County criminal cases is paid at the Clerk of Courts Office in Norristown, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays, according to the county. Cash is the only form of payment accepted for in-person bail. If the person is held at the Montgomery County Correctional Facility, cash bail can be paid there after hours, on weekends and on holidays. Bail can also be paid by wire transfer, which may take one to two business days; when bail is paid by wire, the defendant is automatically listed as the surety.
Anyone who posts bail for someone else becomes the surety and is responsible for the full amount. To get bail back at the end, the defendant must attend every scheduled hearing, and the court may apply the bail money to unpaid fines or court costs, according to the Clerk of Courts. The types of bail and how a judge chooses among them are explained in how bail works in Pennsylvania.
Evidence in a Montgomery County case is shared through a digital system: the District Attorney's Office says it uses Axon Justice, a secure digital evidence management system, for discovery with defense attorneys. Statewide discovery rules still set what must be disclosed and when.
Who prosecutes Norristown cases?
All criminal cases in Montgomery County are prosecuted by the District Attorney, but the office's 2025 annual report lists a dedicated Norristown Community Justice Unit within its Trials Division. The unit prosecutes criminal cases occurring in Norristown, working with Norristown Police and community partners with an eye toward reducing crime, according to the report. Assistant District Attorneys in the division are responsible for their cases from preliminary hearings through trial and sentencing, so the same prosecutor may handle a Norristown case from the DeKalb Street hearing to the Courthouse.
The same report notes that ARD participants perform community service throughout Montgomery County, particularly in Norristown and Pottstown. For a first offender weighing ARD, that service, along with costs, is generally completed before the ARD date, according to the DA's ARD page.
What changes the answer?
- Which part of Norristown. Three courts split the municipality; use the court on your papers.
- Norristown versus the Norritons. East and West Norriton go to 38-1-01.
- ARD. Montgomery's ARD steps differ from Delaware County's; community service and costs are generally completed before the ARD date.
- A DUI. The county's DUI program adds an evaluation and Alcohol Highway Safety School, offered in Norristown among other locations; see the DUI process after an arrest for the shared statewide steps.
- A summary citation. Summary convictions can be appealed to the Clerk of Courts within 30 days; see summary offenses.
For example: a DUI near Main Street
Here is a hypothetical. A driver is stopped in Norristown and charged with DUI. The complaint lists District Court 38-1-16, Suite 200 at 601 DeKalb Street. The driver, with no record, considers Montgomery County's ARD program, which the DA says generally requires waiving the preliminary hearing and formal arraignment and completing community service before the ARD date.
If ARD is not offered or not accepted, the case is held for court and goes to the Courthouse at 2 East Airy Street. Meanwhile PennDOT handles the license separately. This example only illustrates the local path; it does not predict any result.
What mistakes do people make with Norristown cases?
- Going to the wrong suite at 601 DeKalb Street. Three courts share the building.
- Assuming a Norristown address means a Norristown court. The Norritons use a different court.
- Arriving after public hours. The courts close to the public at 4:00 p.m.
- Going to Records without paying first. Proof of payment from Finance is required.
- Expecting an active-case report over the counter. A court order is needed.
- Missing ARD steps. Montgomery's requirements are completed before admission.
What should I do this week?
- Find the court and suite on your complaint or citation.
- Follow every bail condition.
- Write down the details, the names of any witnesses and where cameras may have recorded the incident.
- Decide, with a lawyer, whether to pursue ARD.
- Read the first-week checklist after a criminal charge; the statewide steps apply in Montgomery County too.
- Book a consultation before the preliminary hearing.
